David P. Ribbe, LCP, PhD
Licensed Clinical Psychologist
Dr. Ribbe is a Licensed Clinical Psychologist with a strong background in empirical psychology and Christ-centered counseling. Since 1982, he has worked in the fields of psychiatry, counseling, and clinical psychology in multiple settings including hospitals, colleges and universities, doctor's offices and private practice. In 1981, he earned a BA in Psychology from Wheaton College, an evangelical Christian school in Illinois. While completing his first Master's Degree, he worked full-time on an acute care in-patient psychiatric unit at Highland Park Hospital in the Chicago area. In 1987 he received a Master's Degree in Counseling Psychology from Trinity International University, then known as Trinity Evangelical Divinity School. In 1989, he completed a MS, followed by 1993 by a Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology at Virginia Tech. There he received specialized training and did research in child psychology, disaster-related trauma, and PTSD.
He did his pre-doctoral internship at the Medical University of South Carolina (MUSC) in Charleston, with particular emphases in child psychiatry, multi-systemic family therapy, and crime victim therapy and advocacy; most of his training and research was completed in association with the National Crime Victims Center. Other pre-doctoral training included in-patient adolescent psychiatry at Saint Alban's Psychiatric Hospital; neuropsychology, emergency room psychiatric triage, and Christian Biblical Counseling at the Mountain Home VA Medical Center in Johnson City, TN; child, student, and adult counseling and psychological assessment at the Psychological Services Center as well as individual, career and study skills counseling at the Student Health Center (VA Tech). Post-graduate work included a two-year appointment as Visiting Assistant Professor of Psychiatry at Dartmouth Medical School in Hanover, NH, concurrent with a position as a Research Associate at the National Center for Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder at the VA Medical Center in White River Junction, VT. During his academic psychology career, Dr. Ribbe taught undergraduate courses at Virginia Tech and New River Community College, as well as undergraduate and graduate classes at Hollins University in Roanoke, VA. He published scientific papers and book chapters in the areas of learning, PTSD, disaster trauma, and child psychology/ psychiatry. Then for 9 years, Dr. Ribbe practiced as a dedicated Christ-centered counselor and therapist in association with Total Life Family Practice in Princeton, WV and at Crossroads Counseling located in Christiansburg and Pearisburg, VA. Dr. Ribbe has six children and lives in Blacksburg, VA where he attends Blacksburg Christian Fellowship.
