New Year’s Resolutions
The New Year is a natural opportunity for reflection. The close of the holidays, snowy weather, and time off often allow for the identification of an intentional, “What’s next?” in our lives. The new year’s resolution helps us identify our goals and create an ideal game plan for the next 12 months.
Need some help on how to make and keep New Year’s Resolutions? Here’s how ABT Counseling is tackling the daunting task of setting a resolution this year.
Identifying Your Values to Create Resolutions
When considering what your values might be, think about what you are passionate about. Maybe a passion doesn’t come to mind immediately, or maybe your current purpose seems a little “out there”. That’s okay!
When our CEO and Clinical Director, David Mortellaro, started ABT Counseling, it was nowhere near the scope that it is now. Sometimes we must dream big!
Our mission at ABT Counseling is to identify and meet the mental health needs of the Roanoke Valley and surrounding communities. We’ve been actively working toward this goal for nearly 30 years and are passionate about helping our clients get the mental health care that they need – whether that’s through individual counseling, group counseling, medication management, or psychological testing.
If you need some help identifying what your passion or purpose is, check out this Values Exploration Worksheet for discussion cards. Each card contains questions to help you identify what’s important to you. New Year’s resolutions start with values, passion, and purpose.
Which Goals Will Help You Reach Your New Year’s Resolutions?
Once you consider your values and you know what you’re passionate about this season, it’s time to consider what behaviors will help you accomplish your new year’s resolutions. Setting goals allows us to identify the big-picture and the detailed behavioral changes that can lead us into lives of value.
ABT Counseling is passionate about mental health, and improving client access to that mental health. As such, ABT Counseling has identified next steps toward opening two new offices in 2025. We’ve also hired five additional counselors and medication management providers. These mental health professionals are ready to serve at these new locations or through telehealth.
Now it’s your turn. Consider what your next steps are, given the values you identified above. Start broad, then get specific about your new year’s resolutions and the goals that help you get there.
Keep Focus on Your Resolutions
Perseverance is a skill. Keeping our focus is not something that we inherently know how to do, and it’s often something that we end up learning in adulthood, if we didn’t have (or take) the opportunity earlier in life.
Many people shame themselves for “failure” or a “lack of follow-through” on their new year’s resolutions that are abandoned each year. However, this pattern is truly just human nature.
Change is tough!
ABT Counseling has been working toward identifying and meeting the needs of the Roanoke Valley and surrounding communities for nearly 30 years. During these three decades, we’ve been through lots of changes and several challenges, and we’re not giving up yet! We look forward to the opportunity to continue to expand our practice this coming year.
Consider a mindful, nonjudgmental approach to change and note each time you shift your attention back to your goals and values. Keeping resolutions might look different in every season this year. Regardless, if you want to get to your finish line, you’ll have to hop back on the proverbial horse.
