Three Healthy Habits for Mental Health: Are You “Doing Differently”?

Two people climbing a mountain. Establishing healthy habits for mental health.

Healthy Habits for Mental Health

While we believe that talk therapy can be helpful for mental health, we also recognize that “doing differently” is a requirement for “feeling differently”. That’s why we at ABT Counseling recommend establishing healthy habits for mental health in addition to counseling.

Talking with your counselor about your problems might feel good initially because it allows for emotional validation, catharsis, etcetera. However, talking alone isn’t enough to improve your mental health in the long run.

Life just keeps coming. There will always be another challenge in front of us to talk about.

Acting in addition to talking is required to feel differently, create a new identity, and establish lasting life change.

What better time to start “doing differently” than this summer? Here are a few healthy habits to consider using for improved mental health this summer.

Healthy Habit 1: Join Community with Others

Summer is a perfect season for community building given many of the holidays (Juneteenth, the summer solstice, Independence Day, etc.) and increased family free time. While we recognize that community looks differently for everyone, being intentional to connect with others – often over a meal – may contribute to reduced feelings of isolation and improved mental health.

Healthy Habit 2: Move the Body

Movement is not just restricted to a gym but can include enjoyable activities such as hiking the Blue Ridge Mountains, swimming, or even crawling in the grass with the kids. Movement offers an opportunity for gratitude of the body and its capabilities.

Healthy Habit 3: Spend Time in Nature

While spending time outside is available year-round, it can be more enjoyable during the summer weather. Being outside allows for safe sun exposure, present-moment awareness, and the opportunity to experience the world from a different perspective.
